What to Tell Your Barber So You Get the Cut You Want
Most bad haircuts come from a mix-up, not a bad barber. Five minutes of talking before the clippers come out makes all the difference.
1. Bring a photo
A photo beats any description. Bring two if you can: one from the side and one from the back.
2. Know a few words
- Fade: the sides blend from short to shorter. It can be low, mid or high, and a skin fade goes down to the skin.
- Taper: a softer fade that shows only around the ears and neckline.
- Texture: choppy, broken-up hair on top instead of a flat, even length.
- Line-up: sharp edges on the hairline or beard.
3. Say how much to keep on top
"Take an inch off" means different things to different people. Pinch the length you want to keep, or say "just clean it up."
4. Tell us how you style it
Ten seconds with your fingers, or product and a blow-dryer? Your routine decides the right cut.
5. Mention your job and how often you come in
A cut for an office job is different from one for the gym or a wedding next week. If you come in once a month, we'll cut it to grow out well.
Not sure? Just ask
If something won't suit your hair type, we'll tell you honestly and suggest something close that will.
